Where Does the Time Go

I'm sitting here almost five hours and three days late writing this blog. I try to write the blog on Monday mornings thinking writing something sweet is a nice way to start the week. Clearly something happened. It's now Wed at 2:55 PM. Where do the days and hours go?Maybe it's the three extra hours I spent lost in my writing or searching the internet for a new low fat recipe using turkey or balancing my check book or marketing my new book, The Wine Seekers. Maybe it was the twenty minute phone call that was supposed to take only five minutes or the extra forty five minutes it took to get to the bank this morning through snarled seasonal traffic. Perhaps it was the unplanned half hour I spent in the supermarket check out line or the ten minutes spent watching the bird life out my window or the extra hour I spent answering email. Somedays the unexpected just happens and we learn to deal with it and try to get back on track. but for all the annoying interruptions I hadn't planned the unexpected happened. I had a nice conversation with the lady in front of me in the super market line and because I was stalled in traffic, three new ideas about my next novel came to me. So time to think, time to make a new acquaintance, time spent observing the beauty of nature is not wasted in my opinion. It's getting more done than what you had planned and so that's not a bad deal after all.

A New Day

The paper and news shows this morning are full of stories of the inaugration. Excitement abounds. Inauguration plans are in full swing and at noon today, (EST) we will have a new president.

I love new beginings. Out with the old. The darkness of night is overtaken by the sunlight greeting the morning. We all have high hopes, great expectations and a chance to make a difference.

So on this jubillant day as we celebrate the freedom that our country is known and respected for, let us all smile and have faith that tomorrow will be a great day too.

Those Dreamy Jobs

When my husband first told me I should write full time, I thought to myself, What is he crazy?
But I listened to him and nearly seven years ago, I started defining a new career for myself. My dream job as I put it then.
But did my dream come true? Absolutely not. I thought I'd have uninterrupted days where I would float around in sweats, nimlbed fingered, typing away. Somehow the world would get the message, Linda is writing, and leave me alone to create for hours on end until I was too tired, too hungry, or too out of ideas.
The world did not get it. But I did. The straight and narrow path to my dream job was twisted to say the least. There were still phone calls to make, beds to change and washing to be done. Life's little interruption, which bite when you least suspect. No clean underwear is a problem in my opinion!
Writers find a way. I wrote and kept it up until a book was produced and then sold, which begat another, and now a third.
As my third book, The Wine Seekers hits the retail world, I realize dream jobs are just that. Writing full time has its ups and downs just like any other. But it is a career I love in spite of the lack of clean underwear from time to time. And I wouldn't give up my dream job for anything.

Oh The Possiblities

It's the time of year in Southwest Florida when wood storks make their appearance. Always a pleasure to see these long legged birds grace our blue, sun drenched skys.
Wood storks are very particular creatures and very high maintenance. They need just the right amount of rain and water and fish in order to build their nests. And when conditions aren't perfect they simply move on or decide not to mate.
And I guess that's what I like most about them. Who doesn't want a perfect world where everything you need and dream about are at your fingertips. We always say if only it were possible.
But wood storks are patient and they wait until it's possible. Perhaps a lesson we can all learn from these beautiful creatures.

I resolve

I tried real hard not to make any New Year's resolutions, I just find the old standards, lose 10lbs, exercise more, be nice to my neighbors, etc, etc, etc, hard to keep though I do try to always be nice to my neighbors.
I was exchaning emails with a writer friend and she asked my opinion about a restaurant to take some out of town guests to. We got to chatting about wine and food and learned we had more in common than we thought.
And it got me thinking how little we know about people sometimes, and how it's a joyous surprise to discover a commonality with a another person.
So, I'm going to break my own rule and make it a habit to really to get to know someone this year and who knows by year's end, I may have another close friend or two.
